Dog Obedience Training Blogs - Fun and Games

Games used to help solve problems If you teach the dog to tug a piece of rope, you can use this to teach the dog to retrieve.
A retrieving dog can be taught to bring back a ball.
A ball can be thrown or hit a long way away.
Once he is a retrieving dog, you will be able to use this as an exercise to tire the dog before leaving it alone when you go to work so it does not become a problem barker, or will stop him tearing washing off the line, or digging up your garden, or chewing furniture, or whatever else he might do to fight boredom.
A tired dog will nearly always sleep for a few hours so if you can throw the retrieve toy into a river, dam or swimming pool and have the dog retrieve the toy, he will get nice and tired very quickly.
A 5 minute swim is said to be equivalent to a 5 kilometer walk.
Teach him to retrieve and swim and you will not need to spend as much time exercising him.
Tricks are for fun Teaching your dog to roll over and to shake with the left paw to left hand and right paw to right hand will amuse your friends.
Crawling on his tummy or standing up high on his rear legs will build muscles that might not otherwise get enough exercise.
And once you have him sitting and begging, it is not hard to have him drop his head between his front legs and say his prayers.
After saying his prayers it would be nice if he put himself to bed and pulled his blanket over himself.
Riding a skate board is really quite hard for a dog and riding a surf board even harder, but both can be achieved and can be fun activities for both of you.
I have seen an agility handler using the "bang - play dead" trick to get a dog to lie down on a table used in an agility competition.
Teaching your dog a large repertoire of tricks and then taking him to schools, hospitals and old age homes will allow you to do some social activities with your dog.
Incorporating tricks along with your dog obedience training and using the click and treat training methods will ensure your dog training is always going to be a fun activity.
