How to Stop Male Dogs From Mounting
- 1). Neuter your male puppy when he is 6 months old. Neutering male dogs will reduce hormone-driven mounting behavior.
- 2). Establish yourself as the "alpha" pack leader to your dog through obedience training. Asserting dominance over your pet at a young age will ensure it will obey your commands to stop inappropriate behavior.
- 3). If your dog is mounting a person or another dog, divert his attention with a toy or a treat. Do not grab a dog when it is attempting to mount another dog. Mounting behavior in dogs can be a sign of insecurity. Physically intervening could threaten the animal and instigate a fight.
- 4). Exercise your dog regularly. Dogs that are walked or played with regularly are less likely to exhibit mounting behavior.
- 5). Correct the behavior on the spot. If the dog looks like it is getting ready to mount another dog or a person, quickly command it to stay off. Loudly clap your hands and in a firm voice command the dog by saying "off."
- 6). If your dog is attempting to mount guests or children, put him in his dog crate for a "time out."
