Home Dental Care for Dogs
- 1). Take your dog to a veterinarian to find out which dental products you will need for your dog. Your vet will give you a canine toothbrush, canine tooth cleaner and probably food that is designed to help protect teeth.
- 2). Dip the toothbrush into wet dog food so the bristles are covered with food. Hold your dog’s head as you would if you were petting him, and gently grasp his jaw and hold it in place. Rub the toothbrush along his teeth and gums, letting him taste the food every so often.
- 3). Stop brushing and give him a treat or some food from a bowl if he starts to get agitated during the brushing. Continue to brush his teeth and gums with the food-covered brush until he is comfortable with the process.
- 4). Start putting the tooth cleaner on the brush when you feel your dog is ready, and begin the dental cleaning routine. Set up and stick to a regular cleaning schedule so your dog can get used to it.
- 5). Brush and clean your dog's teeth as often as your vet tells you he needs it. Feed him any special food your vet prescribes.
