How to Put a Dog in Its Crate

    • 1). Set the crate in a corner of an area where the family spends a lot of time. Place an old blanket in the bottom of the crate; create a cozier space for your dog by placing a blanket over the top and sides of the crate to create a "den." Place some play toys and treats in the cage.

    • 2). Leave the crate door open and secure it so it cannot close and scare your dog. Invite your dog to enter the crate by using a command like "kennel." Allow the dog to investigate and sniff the crate to get comfortable with it.

    • 3). Feed your dog its meals in the crate. Once they become accustomed and comfortable with the crate, many dogs enjoy spending time in the crate.

    • 4). Start by shutting the door for 15 to 30 minutes when you feel your dog has become comfortable enough with the crate to remain quiet. If all goes well you can gradually leave the dog in the crate with the door closed leave him for longer intervals. Never leave a puppy in a crate for more than three to four hours at a time; adult dogs should never be crated for longer than eight hours in a day.
