Dog Training - Here"s A Quick Way To Teach Your Dog To Come

Have you ever looked at your cell phone, looked at the name and decided not to answer it because you did not want to talk to that person? If you know that the person calling is not going to result in a pleasant conversation, you will avoid the call.
This is what I think of when I see a dog that won't come back when called.
You see, every time you call your dog to you it has to be for something positive; a treat, praise, a toy etc.
If you call your dog to you and you punish her, she will not come back to you when you call.
It's as simple as that.
So never call your dog to you and punish.
It's important to understand that there are two forms of punishment.
There's intentional and unintentional punishment.
So sometimes you're punishing your dog and don't even realize it.
For example, if your dog is off-leash running around having a good time and you call your dog over to you and immediately put your dog on-leash, you have just unintentionally punished your dog.
Your dog was off-leash running around having a good time and then he goes to you.
He gets to you and the fun stops.
His freedom is gone.
He will remember this the next time he's off-leash.
He will remembered getting punished for coming to you.
It's important to always reward your dog for coming, it is also important to set your dog up to successfully complete the command.
If your dog is not good at coming to you and you let him off-leash you are setting him up for failure.
A good way to teach your dog to come to you is to set your dog up to successfully complete the command.
Here is what I call the spring loaded recall exercise.
With the help of a friend, go to an open place like a soccer or softball field.
Put a leash and flat collar on your dog.
Have your friend hold the leash.
As your friend is holding the leash, you get your dog real excited.
When your dog is real excited, quickly run away from your dog.
Remember your friend is holding the leash and you want your friend to hold your dog back.
If you got your dog excited enough, your dog should be straining on the leash trying to get to you.
Your dog is now set up to successfully complete the command.
Once you are about twenty feet away from your dog, kneel down and say your dog's name and the command "COME.
" Your dog should race towards you.
When your dog gets to you, take hold of your dog's collar and then give your dog a treat.
You can then repeat the process.
The better your are at getting your dog excited, the better your dog will be at coming back to you when you call.
Warning: If you are not sure if your dog will come to you, I recommend practicing this exercise in a fenced in area or attach a 30 foot long line to your dog.
Done right your dog will start to learn this command and will be coming to you in no time.
