The Psychology of Pack

When it comes to training your dog the power held within your own mind is a more effective tool than any other device, motivator or gadget available on the market today.
Teaching dog owners how to effectively use this power to help in the process of creating and maintaining true overall role change can be the most challenging and rewarding part of training.
Often it is assumed that a device, food, or method is doing most of the work to change and modify behavior when in fact its the unseen force, pack psychology, which is creating and maintaining the pack roles.
This is where pack psychology plays an unseen but important part in creating and maintaining balance.
Gaining confidence through situations and interactions, including obedience class, assists with this role changing energy.
Different situations and interactions all help to generate the type of calm, assertive and confident energy which link to the type of pack energy which creates role change.
When I am applying method I am in the moment, it is as if the dog's dominant behavior isn't happening.
The ability to see dominant behavior from the perspective of being normal within the context of pack, and the roles, is very important.
Certain behavior may be elevated, extreme even, however normal within the context of pack.
This doesn't make it any less upsetting for the dog owner.
The greatest challenge is to place it within the proper context, remove emotion from it, isolate it, remove it from your mind,see your dog as a dog.
Becoming pack is really about not thinking at a level which transfers power from you and back through to your dog and the dominant role.
Your dog is in the moment and assessing this power every second.
Gaining confidence, increasing your psychological advantage, is what challenges and lets your dog release this dominant role.
This journey towards true pack leader often isn't easy, it takes time, patience, and insight into what is occurring within the context of the pack relationship and the roles.
The owner must become part of pack, the solution, from onlooker and referee to pack leader.
Devices and method are merely a pathway towards creating this.
Once you are able to see the unseen than the journey is one of true connection and a bond which can never be broken through time.
