One type of rash, called Acanthosis nigricans, is a disorder caused by an increase in the dark pigment melanin. Although it can affect a variety of dog breeds, the main form appears almost exclusively in dachshund dogs. The lesions tend to be darker than the skin around them and feel like velvet. The rash appears on the back, but also in the folds of skin around the neck, and on the dog's belly. The exact cause of Acanthosis nigricans is unknown. It can be a genetic (inherited) condition.
Although the exact cause of the skin disorder is difficult to pinpoint, it can signal that the dog has a high level of insulin in its system. Dogs that are diabetic or obese can be more prone to the Acanthosis nigricans rash. Humans can also have this rash. - Other rashes could bother a dachshund.Interested Dachshund image by Janet Wall from Fotolia.com
Treatment of the Acanthosis nigricans rash is usually just for cosmetic appearance. Some topical ointments and pills available from veterinarians and pet supply stores can help. If the rash is caused by an allergic reaction, it could simply go away with time. If the rash is caused by diabetes or obesity, the conditions must be addressed. The rash itself is not life-threatening, but if a health situation caused it, the underlying cause could be a threat. - Allergies can lead to rashes.game image by siloto from Fotolia.com
A dog's skin or coat is a good indicator of its overall health. Skin rashes, itchy patches, dry skin and the like can be caused by parasites, ticks, mites, allergies, fleas, lice and illness. Some skin rashes disappear quickly, usually signaling that the dachshund came in contact with something that irritated his skin.
Persistent rashes require treatment before they turn into infections. Sarcoptic mange, or scabies, is a common rash that appears as tiny red spots that look like insect bites, often appearing on the back and ear tips. Flea bites can also appear as a rash, and are often noticed on a dachshund's back and hind quarters; these appear as black and white specks from flea feces and flea eggs. - Hormones could be to blame for a rash.chien image by valpictures from Fotolia.com
Dachshunds, as well as other dogs, can be allergic to a variety of things. An allergy to fleas is common and results in a pimply rash that spreads over the back, tail and back legs. Chemicals, soap and other things a dachshund comes in contact with can result in a skin rash or irritation that can lead to hair loss. Flea collars can result in rashes around the neck and back, and food allergies might display themselves in red rashes and sections where the skin becomes thick and dark. Veterinarians and pet-supply shops have ointments and other medications to relieve the rash problem. - The treatment of rashes depends on the cause of the problem.teckel image by valpictures from Fotolia.com
Some dachshunds suffer from hypothyroidism, a thyroid deficiency that reveals itself in thickening patches of hair on the neck and back. Female dachshunds with an estrogen deficiency show some rashes, a thin coat and excessively smooth skin; this primarily bothers spayed dogs. Bacteria, yeast or fungal infections can manifest as rashes. Treatment depends upon the cause.
