Dog Training - A Guide to Obedience Training

You need to consider three things when attempting to train your dog.
Number one is to be consistent; number two is to keep your dog's attention; and number three is to understand the requirements of your dog.
Consistency is needed so that your dog doesn't get confused.
Never falter.
For instance, don't forget to praise your dog when he does something good and reprimand him when he does otherwise.
But never hit your dog in any circumstance.
Dogs may communicate differently, but they interpret our actions well.
Give your dogs treats or pet them as a reward.
As punishment you can take their toy away or not pet them.
For dogs, consistency is a mark of a leader.
Consistency is essential in training your dog and this will make things easier for the both of you.
The biggest challenge in training is keeping your dog's attention.
Your dog won't learn if he doesn't focus on you.
A dog typically has a short attention span.
The first thing to do when training is to have your dog respond to his name.
When he looks at you say the command "watch.
" Do this over and over until you can keep him focused on you.
You can also use treats as a strategy to get your dog's attention.
Hold the treat in front of your dog and have him look at you.
If he keeps looking at you for some time, this means that you've got his attention.
Give him a treat and praise him as a reward.
Repeat this and lengthen the time before giving him the treat as you progress.
This way, you can ensure you get his full attention for a good amount of time.
Understanding how the brain of your dog works is beneficial in obedience training.
Dogs are quite similar to kids.
Avoid having very long training sessions as they will eventually lose interest.
20 to 30 minute daily sessions are good enough to train your pet.
Keep things interesting so that your pet would be eager to please you.
Fun is essential so that your dog will look forward to what you want him to do.
These are basic principles that you can use when training your dog.
You can always alter and improvise your method depending on your dog's personality.
Basically, what you really need is patience and dedication.
