House Training Your Dog: I Said Sit Boo Boo!
House training your dog to go outside to relieve himself is one of the most satisfying things that a pet owner can teach her puppy.
The two reasons are pretty obvious why you want the dog to go out side, one is to not to keep soiling your home and the second thing is that the dog will know he is pleasing you and will want to keep on repeating this habit.
The thing to remember though in the early stages of training is that if he finds that you are unpredictable, frightening and inconsistent learning will become more difficult.
A fact is that a puppy has an inbuilt requirement to keep their den clean and even when tiny they will leave the litter to relieve themselves.
As your puppy is small he will need to empty himself regularly, so you will need to take him out: • When suddenly he seems distracted and starts sniffing the ground and walking around in circles • After playing • When he first wakes up and hasn't been outside for an hour or so • After feeding or drinking For those of you that have children and started potty training them, in a way this teaching experience is very similar so when your pup wants to go outside in the garden go with him as he's short attention span he may forget why he's outside in the first place! At the time when he empties himself make a big fuss of the effort and give him a treat.
For this training to be successful it must happen immediately after he has finished.
Don't leave this until you get back to the house, as he won't understand why he is getting a treat as he won't get the connection at all.
When you accompany him outside and nothing happens, let him take he's time and sniff around and if still no success come back inside but keep an eye on him.
Every time your pup has done a mistake he is learning from this experience and eventually he will be learning the right behaviour.
While he is learning and getting to know how to please you do not ever: - • Smack him and rubbing his nose into something only ingrains in his mind that you do strange things and get upset along with becoming aggressive.
To be successful at training depends on your level of commitment and dedication and the need to be there with him as he learns.
If you need to leave your puppy restrict the area he has to roam and put down newspaper.
When you return just greet your puppy remove the newspaper, if in fact he has soiled the paper it is not really his fault.
